The most comprehensive book on the history and development of toilets, touching on environmental themes, current and future trends and risks, including a large catalog of items from the Museum of Historical Chamber Pots and Toilets.
The authors present their research in a popular-scientific format to not only inform readers in a knowledgeable and open manner about human hygiene in all its, often unexpected, contexts—but also to entertain them.
The first edition in Czech was published in 2020. In the “Dictionary of the Year 2020–2021” competition organized by the Czech Association of Interpreters and Translators, it won 3rd place in the “Visual Encyclopedia” category. This book is the second, expanded and updated edition.

The collection of the Museum of Historical Chamber Pots and Toilets is the largest of its kind in the world and is listed in the Czech Book of Records. It contains nearly 2,800 items – chamber pots, portable toilets, and ceramic WCs. Highlights include chamber pots made for Napoleon Bonaparte, Lincoln’s bedroom in the White House, the Titanic, the Chinese Emperor Qianlong, and even toilets used in space... We hope our exhibition will intrigue you, entertain you, and even teach you a little—even if, as we like to say: “It’s all basically about s**t.”
We wish you an enjoyable visit — Renáta and Jan Sedláček, owners of the collection.
